At what point does the surcharge cover the fuel?
Find the fuel surcharge percentage, or the package count, at which modeled surcharge billings equal the fuel costs you include.
Results
- Package-level billings and a single vehicle’s fuel are different economic measures. This compares them only to show scale.
How this is calculated
Break-even % = fuel costs ÷ eligible transportation charges. Break-even packages = linehaul diesel ÷ (surcharge per package − other fuel per package).
Rates shown as defaults come from carrier publications or each carrier’s published table applied to the EIA price; see the methodology. Estimates and examples are labeled. Results are illustrative and do not represent any carrier’s reported financial results.
Questions
Does the surcharge only have to cover linehaul fuel?
No. It is meant to cover fuel across the network, which is why this calculator lets you add other fuel per package.
