What’s really inside a $39,216 trailer?
A 53-foot trailer of parcels, its modeled package billings, the fuel surcharge on them, and the diesel to haul it. Choose a regional diesel price or set your own. This is not a UPS profit calculator.
Results
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Base package transportation billing | $30,400 |
| Fuel surcharge billing | $8,816 |
| Total modeled package billing | $39,216 |
| Diesel consumed | 76.92 gal |
| Tractor diesel expense | $488.62 |
| Other linehaul cost | $1,250 |
| Fuel surcharge per package | $2.32 |
| Diesel per package | $0.129 |
- The package billing pays for each package’s whole journey, including pickup, sorting, other linehaul legs and delivery. It is not revenue earned by one trailer move.
How this is calculated
Base billing = packages × net charge. Fuel billing = base × fuel %. Diesel = miles ÷ MPG × price.
Defaults reproduce the October 2026 example: 3,800 packages at $8.00 and 29% with $6.352 diesel give $39,216 and about 18×.
Rates shown as defaults come from carrier publications or each carrier’s published table applied to the EIA price; see the methodology. Estimates and examples are labeled. Results are illustrative and do not represent any carrier’s reported financial results.
