What does one cargo flight burn in fuel per package?
Pick an aircraft, distance and load to model a flight’s jet fuel cost per package against the air fuel surcharge on those packages. Aircraft figures are typical published or industry estimates; load factors vary.
Results
Sensitivity to jet fuel
| Jet fuel | Flight fuel | Per package |
|---|---|---|
| $3.50 | $18,649 | $2.58 |
| $4.50 | $23,977 | $3.32 |
| $5.50 | $29,306 | $4.06 |
- Typical fuel burn per hour, payload and cruise speed are estimates and vary with weight, routing and weather. Half an hour is added for taxi, climb and descent.
- Not an estimate of carrier profit; aircraft also fly empty and partial legs.
How this is calculated
Hours = distance ÷ cruise speed + 0.5. Fuel = hours × burn × price. Packages = payload × load ÷ package weight.
Rates shown as defaults come from carrier publications or each carrier’s published table applied to the EIA price; see the methodology. Estimates and examples are labeled. Results are illustrative and do not represent any carrier’s reported financial results.
