## Fuel surcharge economics

- In 2022, UPS’s fuel surcharge revenue rose $3.0 billion while its fuel expense rose $2.17 billion, a gap of $829 million in a single year. (Shipium analysis of UPS’s 2022 Form 10-K: https://www.shipium.com/blog/the-fuel-surcharge-stopped-being-about-fuel)

## How these numbers are produced

- "published" values are read from the carrier's own surcharge page.
- "calculated" values apply the carrier's published index table to the official EIA price, the same way the carrier sets it, verified against weeks the carrier has already published.
- "estimate" marks services where the carrier averages fuel over a window it does not fully publish.
- Percentages apply to net transportation charges (after discounts) and to most accessorial charges.

## Recent carrier rule changes

- November 2, 2026, UPS: Ground, Ground Saver and Domestic Air tables reset. Both tables rise 0.5 percentage points at today’s fuel prices. The point where Ground switches to slow, $0.27 steps moves from $4.99 to $5.80 diesel, and Air from $3.01 to $3.56 jet fuel, so surcharges fall more slowly if fuel drops.
